IT Metrics Scorecard

The "Metrics Scorecard" is more than an example of how to represent the IT organization's health to the customer.  It's a tool for simplifying and normalizing information about disparate services into a comprehensive measure of health.  This presentation will provide a simple taxonomy for the customer, leadership, and the IT organization.

Facilitator: Don Fluke

Campus Video

Whether it's coming from YouTube, FaceBook, abc.com, iTunes or your university cable system, website or LMS, video is culturally hot and it's probably already impacting your IT department.  Are we as IT providers ready to store video, stream it, capture it, produce it, distribute it, support it, police it, manage it, prioritize it and pay for it?  Paul Housholder of Goshen College and David Neidert of Indiana Wesleyan will talk about how video is impacting their respective campuses and creating both problems and opportunities.

IT Audits

Sarbanes-Oxley hasn't become a legal mandate for colleges and universities yet, but it's impact on accounting practices is coming our way in the form of SAS 103 & 112, which place increased scrutiny on IT security and systems.   Representatives from accounting firms Crowe Chizek and BKD will help us look at how the changing regulatory environment is impacting university audits and specifically IT audits--what's coming, what's new and how can you best prepare for the new requirements.

Facilitator: Michael Sherer, Goshen College

Digital Learning Spaces

For the past two decades educators have been attempting to use Instructional Technology with computers and other electronic devices to enhance pedagogy. We have been trying to harness technology to move beyond the orthodox notion that teaching just involves "talk'n'chalk" or "sage on the stage" to a more collaborative style of learning. Certainly, the meteoric rise of social networks such as Facebook shows that today's generation is closely attuned to interacting online when presented with an empowering Web 2.0 environment. But how can institutions construct a framework to effectively implement this mode of learning in their own managed computing facilities? Elgg offers an Open Source approach to social networking systems which, if used in a creative way, could herald a paradigm shift in pedagogy of tectonic proportions. I will demonstrate Earlham's pilot implementation of Elgg as Earlham Learning Spaces, show how it has been used thus far, and talk about some innovative ways that it may be used in the coming year.
