On Thursday, February 24, 2005, Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) held a Student Lobbying Day at the Indiana State House. The purpose of this one-day event was to focus attention on the frozen levels of student aid funding and their potential impact on student enrollment, retention, and graduation next year. Specific details:

Date:   Thursday, February 24, 2005
Time:   11:00 am EST
Place:  Hilton Hotel, Downtown Indianapolis (formerly the Adams Mark Hotel)
120 West Market Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204
            317-972-0600
Lunch will be served at approximately 11:30 am EST

Theme: Fund Students First!

ICI is inviting each of its member institutions to select between 10-15 students to be participants in this important event. We are seeking a diverse mixture of students who can tell convincingly their corresponding “stories” of how the proposed frozen levels of state student aid will affect their opportunities to stay enrolled at the college of their choice in Indiana. Because of the explicit focus on state-funded student financial aid, it would be most beneficial to encourage participation in this event by those who are state financial aid recipients.

Students will gather in Indianapolis before lunch at 11:00 a.m. EST and receive a briefing from ICI staff on the current student aid funding situation before walking to the State House to deliver personal messages to the senators and representative from their hometowns. If students wish to prepare a written statement in advance, please advise them to use no more than one page, handwritten, stating their personal experience with the state financial aid program.  Students also will have the opportunity to compose a note during the briefing session before their visits to the State House.

Parking, the State House, and the hotel are all within one block of each other. Specific details on parking and other logistic details will be coming to you via e-mail on Monday, February 21st. If any questions arise, please the contact the ICI office at 317-236-6090.

We very much appreciate your encouragement of students to participate in this important event! Please remind participating students that all Indiana residents are represented by one State Senator and one member of the state House of Representatives. Residents may easily confirm whom their legislators are by typing in their home address on the web site listed below under "Find your elected officials in Indiana".
