Student Lobby Day 2009

On February 24, more than 200 students from 20 ICI campuses traveled to Indianapolis to make personal calls on their hometown legislators at the State House.  The students had two main messages that they wanted to deliver:  Sincere thanks for the legislators’ ongoing commitment to SSACI funding and the urgent need - now more than ever - for their continued support of this program.  I hope you enjoy seeing our students involved in the legislative process and telling “Indiana’s independent college story.”  (Click on photo for larger image)

ICI students arrive at the Indiana History Center in downtown Indianapolis for an organizational meeting and lunch before walking to the State House to meet with their hometown legislators.

Nametags identifying the students and their colleges, as well as bright blue “Fund Students First” scarves, identify the group as representing Indiana’s 31 independent campuses.

ICI President & CEO Hans Giesecke talks with students as they write personal letters to their legislators, explaining how their state financial aid is making it possible for them to stay in school.

All 200-plus students gather in the Indiana History Center auditorium for a briefing about what to expect when they get to the State House and how to communicate their message most effectively to legislators.

Rose-Hulman alumnus Jeff Papa, chief of staff & chief legal counsel for the Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore, explains the organization of the Indiana General Assembly and the steps in the law-making process for the students.

At the State House, a student meets with Rep. Phyllis J. Pond (R – New Haven).

Students ask the Chamber door keeper to pass notes requesting a meeting to their hometown legislators.

Sen. Brent Waltz (R – Indianapolis) talks with students outside the Senate Chamber.

A campus advisor consults the legislative directory to share information about---and photos of---their legislators with her students.

Sen. Charles A. Lewis (D – Charlestown) hears how SSACI funds are critical to these students being able to complete their college degrees.

Sen. Robert Deig (D – Mount Vernon) meets with student constituents.

Sen. James W. Merritt, Jr. (R – Indianapolis) discusses the current status of SSACI funding in the legislative session.
