Dr. Robert A. Pastoor began his term at SJC in March of 2015, bringing with him more than thirty years of experience in higher education and administration. Pastoor earned his Doctorate of Educational Leadership, Higher Education, and Technology Leadership from the University of Montana. He earned his Master of Education in Counseling from McDaniel College and his Bachelor of Science in History and Education from Mount St. Mary’s University. Prior to his term at SJC, Pastoor served as the vice president for student life at Marietta College of Marietta, Ohio for four years. He also held vice presidential positions at the University of San Diego, Carroll College in Montana, and Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland. He served as the president of Saint John’s Catholic Prep in Maryland for four years, as well, giving him years of administrative experience, which he brings to his position at SJC.
In the first several months of his term at SJC, Dr. Pastoor has made increased efforts to reach out to constituents of the College and has encouraged them to become more involved in the SJC community. He has worked to develop a clearer vision for the future of the College, with help from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Board members. This helped the College greatly, laying a foundation for progress and focusing improvement efforts to a single vision, agreed upon by representatives of all members of the SJC community.
Since his term began, Dr. Pastoor has demonstrated his dedication to the College and expressed his satisfaction with SJC. “I anticipate staying at Saint Joe’s for as long as I can be of service to the community in moving the College into the future,” said Dr. Pastoor, “and I hope that I can do that for a long time. Saint Joseph’s is a wonderful college with strong academic programs rooted in the liberal arts. The faculty is fully engaged, not only in their own discipline but also in cross-discipline opportunities that are particularly present in the Core. Our students are committed to their academics, and I continue to be impressed by the amount of service they provide in the social justice area in fulfillment of the Mission of the College and C.PP.S. As I speak to students and to the alumni of the College it is clear that the College experience for them and for our present students has been and continues to be transformational.”
Looking to the future and his term at SJC, Pastoor is optimistic and has many plans to help move the College forward according to the vision: “My immediate plans are to work on introducing on-line education, strengthening our Master’s level programs, researching potential new undergraduate academic programs, increasing the overall number of students and, in particular, the number of international students on campus, developing a Strategic Plan that will serve as a blueprint for the next four to five years, and greatly increasing our fundraising in order to meet the financial challenges that we face.”
Join us in wishing Dr. Pastoor luck in his presidency at the inauguration ceremony on October 16, the start of what will hopefully be a long and prosperous time at SJC.
