At Earlham, we believe learning is a pathway to a life of consequence. We expect our students to be fully present: to think rigorously, value directness and genuineness, and actively seek insights from differing perspectives.
The values that we model and practice at Earlham are rooted in centuries of Quaker tradition, and they also constitute the ideal toolkit for contemporary success. Earlham graduates are astute and adept at building consensus. They’re able to discern the signal from the noise. They exemplify transparency and accountability. They’re ready for working environments where progress hinges on people from diverse backgrounds “rowing together”— whether it’s in medicine, business, education, or fields and careers that have yet to be invented.
Nowhere is the world closer than it is here at Earlham. We are consistently ranked among the top liberal arts colleges for enrolling the highest percentage of international students. Our students represent more than 40 states and nearly 70 countries. It is impossible to come to our campus and not leave with a wider perspective and an intellectual framework rich in global content. Two-thirds of the faculty have led at least one of the college’s off-campus study programs in locations spanning Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. While only one percent of the nation’s undergraduates study abroad, 70 percent of each Earlham graduating class has studied outside the United States.
The college also offers students plentiful opportunities for leadership, service and fun. Most students are involved in athletic teams, performing arts groups, clubs, advocacy organizations or student government. Many complete internships in Richmond.
The 800-acre campus includes trails, woods and ponds for outdoor recreation and the College has well-equipped indoor and outdoor facilities for varsity and recreational sports. Earlham offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in 40 disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields, as well as self-designed studies and a cooperative program in engineering. Graduate programs in education make Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Education degrees available. Earlham graduates are well prepared for further study; nearly half of those graduating in the last ten years enrolled in graduate or professional school, often at top-ranked universities.
