Indiana Legislative Internship Opportunities
Share |

Independent Colleges of Indiana encourages students of ICI member institutions to participate in the  120+ internship opportunities that are available through the Indiana General Assembly.  ICI believes that students in these positions benefit directly through valuable learning experiences and the opportunity to represent and support the private college sector in Indiana.  And, what better way for legislators to experience the return on investment for Indiana that providing our students with state financial aid brings!

The application period for  legislative internships generally begins in August prior to the start of the legislative session in January.   Paid internships with the Indiana House of Representatives and the Indiana State Senate are full-time, spring-semester commitments that provide practical experience with Indiana State Government. Interns actively participate in the entire legislative process as they assist legislators and staff within the professional setting of the Indiana Statehouse.

The internship program is designed as an educational program and aligns well with most university academic internship requirements. Although the rigorous workload during the session makes assuming additional course work during the internship difficult, most interns earn academic credit for their participation and are able to maintain their full-time student status.

There are four separately administered legislative internship programs. Students can learn more about these opportunities by visiting each of the caucus’ websites linked below. Students are encouraged to apply to both the senate and house internship programs of either party, but are cautioned not to apply to both parties as their applications may be rejected. As these opportunities are non-partisan, students may apply to either party based on their legislative interests.   Application deadlines listed below will be updated for 2015 when they become available.
