Meet the Class of 2014
At the Indiana Academy’s 44th annual symposium last week, one of the honorees, being inducted for lifetime achievement and contribution to Indiana and its private colleges and their students, said he didn’t expect anyone would remember him 100 years from now, but that wasn’t the point. He recounted sitting in a Board meeting at one of our member institutions and realizing that he didn’t know the names of those who had sat in these same seats more than 100 years ago. What he did know, though, was that what they had decided and accomplished was good, wise and enduring. He knew that from the current strength of the institution and the strength and contributions of its graduates over time.
Although I don’t believe that this person, nor his fellow members of the Academy, will be forgotten, even in a hundred or more years, the larger point is true. What animates and distinguishes the members of the Indiana Academy and other outstanding leaders like them is the desire to give back, to build a better future for those who come after them. Let me introduce to you our newest Academy members (pictured left to right below) with gratitude for their many, many contributions to our ICI colleges and students:
- John D. Zeglis (Culver) is the retired president of AT&T and former chairman & CEO of AT&T Wireless after its IPO and spin-off from AT&T, as well as founder and chairman of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA’s D-League. He is currently a member of the board of trustees of Valparaiso University, Manchester University, and University of Illinois’ College of Business Center for Professional Responsibility.

Her prior service includes terms as a U.S. attorney of the Southern District of Indiana and an assistant attorney general with the U.S. Department of Justice. She is a trustee of the University of Indianapolis and a former member of the board of visitors of DePauw University, her alma mater.
