2014 "Realizing the Dream" Celebration”
As the first in my family to attend college, my favorite event as ICI president is our annual “Realizing the Dream” banquet, recognizing an outstanding first-generation sophomore from each of our 31 private colleges and universities. This year’s event, held November 1 in Indianapolis, was even more special, marking the 25th anniversary of this program made possible by a Lilly Endowment Inc. grant and bringing the total number of students recognized to date to more than 750. Each honored student received a $2,500 check to help with college costs, and each student’s chosen “most influential” teacher received $1,000.
Santiago Jaramillo, a recent Indiana Wesleyan graduate, was the keynote speaker, sharing the story of his family's flight from Colombia after finding themselves on a guerrilla “kidnap list” and his founding of a mobile app company while still in college. His company, Blue Bridge Digital, recently attracted more than $1 M in venture capital and is experiencing exponential growth. His message to the students: perseverance and adaptability. He told them about his own first year of sales ($0) and the company responsible for the video game “Angry Birds,” which far from the overnight success it has been portrayed, succeeded only after a string of 51 failures.
