Independent Colleges Indiana

mission centered and market smart

Private Higher Education

Last month, I participated in the inauguration of one of our new presidents—Dr. David McFadden of Manchester University.  At the luncheon, I was privileged to bring greetings on behalf of Manchester’s 30 sister private colleges and universities in Indiana.  In my remarks, I incorporated a phrase that Manchester often uses to describe itself—“Mission Centered and Market Smart.”  It’s a strategy that has allowed the university to thrive for 125 years now, staying true to its mission of producing graduates of “ability and conviction” while responding to changing times and needs with  innovative programs and approaches.

It struck me that “Mission Centered and Market Smart” is an equally apt description of other private, nonprofit colleges and universities in Indiana and across the country, inspiring me to write a perspective piece that appeared recently in Inside Indiana Business and elsewhere (the article may be accessed here).

And on the subject of inspiration, the theme for David’s inaugural celebration was “Abundance,” and its accompanying opportunity, responsibility, and surprise, inspired by a beautiful passage from the Wendell Berry novel Hannah Coulter: "The world is so full, like a pregnant woman carrying a child within her, carrying a child in one arm and leading another by the hand …. Every puddle in the lane is ringed by sipping butterflies that fly up in a flutter when you walk by.

Abundance seems a fitting theme for this joyous holiday season, as well.  Thanks to each of you for the abundant and generous support and talent that you provide our ICI students and colleges and all best wishes for  a happy and productive 2015!
