Looking for first-hand help with college and everything that comes with it?
Take a look at what our ICI interns have to say.
Meet Katie, the summer 2016 ICI Intern: I’m Katie Goodrich, a senior journalism major at an ICI member campus. I believe in grammar, justice and the right to ice cream. I am fluent in English, sarcasm and gibberish. My talents include an incredible memory for '90s song lyrics, power naps and having just enough bad luck to produce great anecdotes.
Embrace Your College's Quirks
November 16, 2016
Every college has their own strange celebrations and habits. Learn to love the ones at your school and take place in the traditions.
Colleges are old institutions with rich histories and weird pastimes.
I am here to tell you that no tradition is too weird to be a part of.
Rub a statue’s toe nose before a big exam. Hop into every fountain on campus before you graduate. Kiss under the arch at midnight. Carve your name in a wall (OK maybe not this one because it’s probably vandalism).
Every school has their own identity, and I am proponent of participating in the fun and silly things that come along with that.
When I was a freshman, I heard that people jumped into fountains in the middle of the night. Initially, I thought they were crazy or just immature.
Then on a random Tuesday night, my friend and I had a paper due at midnight. We were really stressed about it, and when we finally turned our assignments in, our brains were kind of fried and, suddenly, it sounded like an amazing plan to jump in a fountain.
It was also October. And cold.
We did it, and it was so much fun. Yes, it was dumb. Yes, we were soaked on the cold walk home. No, I do not regret it.
After that fateful night, I fully embraced all the eccentricities colleges have to offer.
As long as you are not breaking any laws or hurting yourself or other people, I say go for it. College is a time for learning, but it is also a time for fun.
Make the memories that you can your friends will reminisce about when you visit for homecoming years down the road.
Get the experiences that will bond you with fellow alums down the road. It will be worth it for that great conversation in an airport security line. (True story, I met someone who went to my school who asked how many fountains I’d jumped in so far.)
Ask the older students or professors who graduated from the school about their favorite traditions. Or maybe start your own.
Doing these weird things will make you feel closer to your school, and you will appreciate it more for all of the normal things it does.
So go forth and embrace the crazy.
