Meet Katie, the summer 2016 ICI Intern: I’m Katie Goodrich, a rising senior journalism major at an ICI member campus. I believe in grammar, justice and the right to ice cream. I am fluent in English, sarcasm and gibberish. My talents include an incredible memory for '90s song lyrics, power naps and having just enough bad luck to produce great anecdotes.

Finals Week Told in GIFs

June 9, 2016

Finals week is the time when procrastination catches up to you, and sleep becomes a stranger. However, some planning can save your grades, and your sanity.

Finals week has come and gone for most college students, and I think we are all just recovering.

Here is my retelling of finals week in GIF form.

I shudder when anyone mentions finals week. It is a force of habit.

People think college students exaggerate about how terrible finals week can be. If you procrastinate or if professors decide to add an extra assignment, the week can really be miserable.

But if you play your cards right, you will be just fine.

Having a plan is the most important thing. It will keep you on schedule, and I guarantee no essay or project will take you by surprise.

At first, your head will spin as you write it all down. The papers, the projects, the presentations… But it will help you prioritize.

Once you have the plan, you have to start working on it.

Resist the temptation to watch Netflix in an endless loop. Do not get caught in the webs of the internet.

Starting is the hardest, but once you have accomplished something – even just opening a new document – the rest of the tasks seems easier.

Find your groove.

Research shows that working continuously on something improves efficiency. That means turning your phone on “Do Not Disturb.” You’ll just have to wait to Snapchat your friend back. I promise your streak will survive if you wait 30 minutes.

Remove some distractions from your life.

Your friends will understand if you can’t hang out every day, because they have finals, too.  You can plan some study breaks together, like watching a movie or treating yourself with ice cream.

Getting in the zone might mean changing your study spot. Try the library or somewhere outside. If you like to be around people and you won’t just people-watch, try a local coffee shop.

Speaking of coffee, you can drink some.

But be careful. Do not rely on caffeine to keep you attentive.

Soon enough, you will get tired.

Your eyelids will be heavy, and the words will start to dance on your computer screen.

Put the coffee cup down and go to bed.

Rest is very important, because you won’t be at your best if you pull an all-nighter.

When you turn in the last paper or walk out of the final exam, you will feel invincible.

You just slayed the beast. You just conquered the academic world.

Then, you’ll fall over in exhaustion. But you will sleep on a cloud of victory (and maybe a pile of dirty laundry, but you can handle that when you wake up).
