ICI Student Enrollment by Age
Updating the Perception
Picture this . . . the start of a college year. Do you see students in their late teens and early twenties moving into residence halls with the help of their parents, gathering in small groups across campus for the first day of classes? If so, we urge you to update that image. Replace one out of every three students in your mind with an adult, age 25 or older, with a job, family, busy personal life and a college course load. That’s the reality now.
ICI colleges and universities have led the way in adult learning and now serve some 30,000 "nontraditional” students. Although adult learning has become "traditional” for many ICI institutions, a variety of innovative programs—evening and weekend, online, hybrid (online plus campus), satellite locations, and in the workplace—continue to create new paths of success.
These students, 33% (and growing) of ICI’s total enrollment, are needed if Indiana is to attain its goal of 60% of adults with a post secondary credential by 2025. Many such students have some college credit, but no degree. Without them, there just aren’t enough people to reach that goal.
ICI is pleased to partner with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education this fall on its "Return and Complete” initiative. The state will provide lists of potential students who could benefit from returning to complete a college credential. ICI institutions will reach out to those candidates, offering pathways for renewed success and advance the state’s college-educated, adult population.
